Shopping for pet insurance

The reason why so many of us don’t bother buying pet insurance is because it’s difficult to know where to start. There are so many companies and policies to choose from that it gets overwhelming. Is it really worth it to pay monthly premiums for pet insurance when your pet is healthy?

Here are some tips for where to start:

Choose four or five companies and visit their web sites. This will give you a pretty good idea of what they are all about. Find the companies "Get a quote" section, and put in your pet’s information. This will give you an idea of what your monthly premium would be based on the coverage you want. If you do this with four or five companies, you’ll have a good idea of what company is best for you and your pet’s needs.

Once you’ve narrowed it down to two or three companies or you think you’ve found one company you’d like to go with, write out a list of questions or concerns you have. These questions might be "Is there a discount if I have two dogs?" or "Will my 9-year-old cat be covered?" or "Will my dogs existing allergies be covered?"

You can probably find the answers to some of these questions on the pet insurance web sites. For the questions you can’t find answers to, call up the companies and directly speak with a representative. Speaking with an actual person will give you an idea of how you will be treated when you submit claims later on. If it’s nearly impossible to reach someone, that might be a sign to go with a different company.

Don’t feel like you have to have pet insurance for your animals, but take your time to think about all the options.
